Book Shelf Organization

I loooove books.  Any time I have extra money, a book is at the top of my list of things to buy.  There are dozens of books on my wish list.   There are over 300 books on my shelves.  There’s nothing quite like the cozy feeling that comes over me when I walk into our room and see all my books on our shelves.

2014-04-04 14.23.11

My left shelf is my fiction area.  Top shelf is modern fiction, second shelf is classics (mostly Dickens, but a few other authors are mixed in), third and fourth shelves are my young adult/children section.  Fifth shelf on the bottom right begins my nonfiction section and contains my pregnancy books.

2014-04-04 14.24.30My right shelf contains the rest of my nonfiction books.  Top shelf has Bible books, such as commentaries and books on hermeneutics.  Second shelf is various Christian living books.  Third shelf is my marriage section.  The beginning of my fourth shelf is my parenting section, and the rest of that shelf is my biography section.

Well, I figured it was time for me to make my debut in the blogging world.  Mom seems to like posting here, so thought I’d give it a shot.

So, what do I do all day?  Pretty much whatever strikes my fancy.  I figured out that if I move my knees and my hands…I can actually go somewhere!  It’s pretty nifty.  Mom must think I’m pretty smart for inventing it, because after I showed her how to do it, sometimes she now crawls over to me while talking to me in a funny voice.

I like to explore.  I like finding new things.  Mommy and Daddy say that I like the non toys better than the real toys.  I don’t quite know what they mean, but I sure do love playing with water bottles, spatulas, spoons, and lotion containers.  My other favorite is a keyboard.  I liked to use Daddy’s, but he decided I was big enough to have my own, so he got me one that I play with all the time.

I also like to pick up any item of interest.  Leaves are particularly interesting.  (I love the outdoors.  So many things to look at and listen to.)  Today I found this amazing little brown thing and it kind of crinkled.  Mommy came over and said, “Yucky, yucky” and quickly took me to get my hand wiped off.  She said something about a dead moth.  I don’t know about that, but it was interesting!

Mommy keeps talking about something called “first birthday.”  She seems pretty excited about it, so it must be fun.  I heard Daddy and Mommy talking about how my grandparents are coming.  That will be fun!

Well, that’s all for now.  I think I’ll have a little snack and take a nap.

To Do Lists

I have reinstated the use of to-do lists.

I go through spells in which I’ll use them.  Then I get so used to them that I either burn out or forget to use them.  Apparently I’m the type that needs to keep changing things up.

But for now it’s back to to-do lists!  I’m loving it.  I make a list for every day and it is divided into two sections…one section for things to be completed while the Wingman is awake, and one section for things to do while he’s sleeping.

2014-03-09 16.05.39My notebook

Each day I have personal goals (like memorizing a song, working on my Spanish, or playing piano), exercising, and cleaning.  Some jobs I do every day (dishes and emptying the trash), and bigger jobs or jobs that don’t need to be done as frequently, I spread throughout the week.  This week I had things like disinfecting trash cans, dusting the fans, and wiping down appliance doors.  I use The Confident Mom’s planner for ideas.  (I highly recommend her planner!!)

I am loving how much it’s been keeping me on top of things.  The extra accountability is really helpful for getting things accomplished.

Do you use to-do lists?  How do you best organize your time?

I’m a Mom?

???????????????????????????????????????Microsoft Image

I’ve been a Mom for over 7 months now.  Yet I still sometimes look at my sweet son and say, “Whoa.  I’m a MOM.  This is my SON.”  And I am blown away all over again.

Our son is the sweetest little boy.  He just keeps getting cuter and cuter, smarter and smarter. There are definitely overwhelming moments however.  Our little angel baby is very clingy.  For the first six months of his life, he was only happy in Mommy’s arms.  Occasionally he would sit in Daddy’s lap for a little while, but then he would cry for Mommy.  Tummy time lasted about 30 seconds (on a good day) and he had to be VERY asleep before he went in his crib or he would wake up and cry.  Or scream.  Or screech.

At first it was very very difficult.  I was so sleep deprived….absolutely exhausted.  It felt like all he did was cry all day.  He always woke up crying.  I got tired of having him constantly all over me.  There were days where I lived for his nap times and as soon as I shut the door to the nursery I breathed a sigh of relief.  And then I usually would climb back into my own bed for some rest.

The past few weeks he has gotten more mobile (yes, your baby will still meet developmental milestones even if s/he isn’t doing lots of tummy time!) and now he can play by himself anywhere from 5-20 minutes.  Amazing!!!!   And, get this….he even ASKS for Daddy to hold him sometimes!!

He still loves his Mommy though.  Often he will be playing with his toys and look over at me to make sure I’m still there.  If I look back at him and smile, he’ll just grin at me.  Sometimes he will inch or scoot (not quite crawling yet) over to me and just lay a hand on me while he continues to examine a toy.  Other times he will attempt to crawl into my lap.  If he’s sitting next to me, he’ll lean over periodically for a hug and then go back to playing.  Play for 10 seconds, hug, play for 10 seconds, hug, play for 10 seconds…climbs into Mommy’s lap. He loves cuddle time too.  He loves it when I pick him up and hold him against me.  He’ll burrow in and put his head on my shoulder or neck.  Sometimes his little feet will “climb” up my stomach.  And he’ll giggle in my ear.

I love it.

But I’m still blown away.  I’m blown away that I can be a comfort to my son.  That it’s me that makes him feel safe and loved.  That my body brings him comfort and is perfect for cuddles. All of these things remind me that God saw fit to make me a mother.  He knew what my heart would need as encouragement on this path.  Even though the clingy times were/are very rough, it is those moments that encourage my heart so much.  There were so many times when I was younger that I didn’t know if I could bring the kind of comfort to a baby that mothers are supposed to.

God says, “Yes.”  God says that He can and will give me what it takes.  Because He has called me to this. Those moments that are difficult…and I’m sure there are many more to come…are blessings in disguise.

Oil Pulling

After quite some time of saying I wanted to try it…I finally decided to take the plunge.  I have now joined the ranks of those who oil pull.

Oil pulling is basically swishing oil around in your mouth.  This process can help cut through plaque and remove toxins.  There are some pretty impressive stories as to the benefits of oil pulling, ranging from improved gum health to relieving headaches.

My endeavors began on March 2.  All I do is take a small spoonful of coconut oil and swish it around in my mouth.  Ideally, it should be done for about 20 minutes.  So far I typically make it 15-18.  The hardest parts for me are the beginning (as the coconut oil first goes in my mouth) and the end (once I have a bigger amount of liquid I am swishing due to saliva build up).  In order to get my mind off of it (which helps relieve gagging 😉 ), I try to oil pull while cleaning the house, watching a movie, or working on a project.

We’ll see what kind of results I get!  I did some googling and found lists of what oil pulling can supposedly help with.  Here are my symptoms that I would love to see results with.

-cavity on one of my top front teeth
-sensitivity on lower back teeth
-acne
-yellow teeth
-white gums around teeth
-sinus congestion
-low energy
-insomnia

I am currently 9 days in.  Yesterday (day 8) I did not oil pull.

Days 1-4 the tooth with my cavity was throbbing after swishing.
About Day 4 I noticed an increase in tooth sensitivity….my top teeth were now feeling sensitive as well.
Day 7 – the cavity felt different.  Hopefully getting smaller?
Day 8 – sensitivity on top teeth seems to be gone.
– definite decrease in the whiteness on gums

We’ll see what happens as I keep this up!

Have you tried oil pulling?  Had any results?
