Ways to Grow Your Prayer Life

I am not a prayer warrior.  Prayer is something that I struggle with.  Some spells more than others.  But prayer is an area in which I really want to grow.  Here are some things that have been helpful to me in the past!

How to Grow in Prayer:

  • Just pray!  The more you do it, the more it becomes a habit.  Of course, we don’t want prayer to become a habit in the sense that it is rote or mechanical….but a habit in the sense that it is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear of a need or when you need strength or when you just want to praise Him!
  • Pray throughout the day.  Pray when you’re doing dishes or when you’re driving.  Pray when you have a few minutes of quiet.  Pray in the shower.
  • Set an alarm to pray.  Several years ago, I set my watch to beep every hour on the hour.  This was a reminder to pray.  While I don’t do that anymore, I do have a few reminders on Google calendar.  Every day when a prayer topic comes up, Google sends me an email which buzzes my phone.
  • Make a prayer journal.  There are several ways you can do this.  When I was in high school, I had a journal with a page for each friend.  I asked them to send me a picture of themselves.  Every day when I prayed, I had a list of prayer requests for them as well as their picture to look at while I was praying.  I’ve also kept prayer journals with lists of prayer requests and answered prayer.  Other times I have written out actual prayers.
  • Pray for others.  I’ve definitely noticed times where I am praying so hard about various things going on in my life….so hard and so often that rather than releasing things to God, I was obsessing over them.  Sometimes I need to stop praying for myself and start praying for others.  This definitely gives some much needed space and perspective.

There are several resources that have been great in my prayer life!

Prayer Portions by Sylvia Gunter – This big book has all kinds of prayer topics.  There are five sections on different kinds of prayer: praise, repentance, warfare, personal, and intercessory.

For the Family by Sylvia Gunter – This is basically an excerpt from Prayer Portions.  This has specific prayers for your husband, your wife, your children, your marriage, your family…..etc.  Each prayer is loaded with Scripture.

Stormie Omartian books – One of my favorites was The Power of a Praying Wife.  I also have (but haven’t finished) The Power of a Praying Woman and The Power of a Praying Parent.  While I don’t always agree with everything she writes, I have greatly benefited from these books.  You can easily pray exactly what she has written (again, prayers full of Scripture!) or you can use the topics as springboards for your own prayers.

The Presidential Prayer Team – Sign up for weekly emails so you can be praying for the President, Senators, Ambassadors, the military, etc.

Prayr List – I love this web site!  Log in with your Facebook information, and pray for your Facebook friends.  You can set it so that you pray for all your friends weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually.

A Praying Life by Paul Miller – I read this book in college and it was SO good.  I want to re-read it!!

31 Prayers For Our Husbands – Print out reminders to pray for your husband.

Book Review: Praying for Boys

I love this book.

I love it not only because it is intensely practical, but because it is written by a Mom who, as she readily admits, does not have it all together and is desperate.  Desperate for God’s intervention in her son’s lives.  Brooke McGlothlin’s definition of prayer…”The desperate cry of a mama whose life has taught her she has so little control.”

Each of the 21 chapters in Praying for Boys is a different prayer topic, such as “obedience,” “purity” or “a servant’s heart.”  Brooke discusses the importance of each, and includes prayers that you can pray for your son/s….with words taken straight from Scripture.  To close each chapter, she wrote some study questions.

Being in prayer for our son was amazing.  But the main thing I felt while reading this book?  Conviction.  It was convicting to realize how much this isn’t about praying for our son….this is about falling on my face before God because I am inadequate.  I need to grow in each of these 21 areas.  I need to be walking rightly before God before I can ever model it for my son.  As I went through the chapters, I gradually switched from just praying for the Wingman, to praying for our entire family.  We all need God right now, because the Pilot and I can’t do this parenting thing on our own!!!

I definitely recommend this book to any boy Mom out there!!

Homemade Christmas

Wyatt made his first Christmas presents this year!  I knew that I wanted to do something to incorporate his hand or foot print.  Pinterest was full of ideas, as usual.

Attempt #1 – Salt Dough Ornaments.  This was a fail.  We forgot to put holes in them for hanging, the hand and foot impressions were barely visible, and they crumbled as they dried up.

Attempt #2 – Washable paint.  We took a rag and applied some paint to the bottom of the Wingman’s foot.  This was a fail.  His foot just slid all around, rendering the painted imprint only remotely resembling the general shape of a foot.

Attempt #3 – Paint pen.  Success!  I traced the Wingman’s hand on a piece of paper and used that as a stencil for the ornaments.  The first one, I taped the paper on for easier tracing….but when I removed the tape, it removed the color on the ornament. Oops!  On the rest of them, I was able to carefully hold the paper in place and trace the hand print.  Then I filled it in with the paint pen.

I love how they turned out!!  His little baby hands are so precious.  🙂

T-6 Complete

Its been a while since my last UPT (Pilot Training) update. Since then, I have completed the T-6 Program, which included aerobatics, instrument and formation flying. It was a blast and I learned a lot with almost 100 hours in the T-6.

Solo wBonnie

The first hurdle in T-6’s was getting to the first solo flight (aka the Pogo flight). The first flight was just around the pattern for about a half hour. After the Pogo flight, I was caught and dunked in the dunk tank. After that flight, I went on to solo the T-6 four more times throughout the T-6 program, including flights in the pattern, out to the practice area, and the last solo flight which was in formation.

Solo Dunk

Now I am T-6 Complete.  Last Wednesday I tracked to T-1’s. In T-1’s I will continue my flight training with a multi-engine platform. I cannot wait for the next few months as I learn the new aircraft and have a blast flying. Once completed with the T-1, I will drop (be assigned) to a MWS (Major Weapon System) and we’ll move on to a new base…

Book Review: Miss Brenda and the Loveladies

downloadMiss Brenda and the Loveladies, written by Brenda Spahn and Irene Zutell, I found to be both good and bad.  This true story chronicles a woman’s adventure in starting a “whole-way” house for women recently released from prison.  The concept was to give them everything they needed…clothes, food, a nice home, a job, friendship….to make it after being released.

Brenda Spahn certainly had a lot of guts.  She shares honestly about some of the difficulties and struggles she went through.  But over and over, she highlights how these women were precious people.  I love how she did not believe the ever popular “once an addict, always an addict.”  They didn’t need AA to remind them they were still addicts who were a certain number of days clean.  They were new people.

There are some sections that would probably not be appropriate for younger readers, such as the accounts of abuse, both substance and sexual, asterisked language, and some of the unwise choices some of the women made.

While I loved her heart for this amazing and much-needed ministry, I was troubled by several aspects of the book.  I was shocked when on the very first page she takes the Lord’s name in vain.  This occurred several more times.  In other sections, she used other language of various levels of offense.

There were also several things that were troubling theologically.  a) There was mention of a woman becoming ordained.  b) Brenda was pursuing this ministry against her husband’s wishes and lived away from him against his wishes for quite some time.  c) There were several mentions of how these women didn’t have a chance for a successful, crime free life because of their terrible pasts of abuse.  d) The mention of divorce, not God, being the answer to some problems.  e) Perhaps the biggest of all…there is no discussion of true salvation.  Brenda explains that prayer, not salvation, will bring them into a real relationship with God.  She encourages the ladies to be baptized without any discussion or mention (in the book at least) of sin or Jesus’ death and resurrection.  I understand that authors must pick and choose details to include due to time and space, but some of these details are rather important.  Further details might reconcile these concerns, but without knowing those details, my concerns remain.

Bottom line: I was super encouraged by Brenda’s heart for those who are so often overlooked, but I was very troubled by much of her life and methods.

Book Review: An Elegant Solution

This book took me quite some time to get through, because, honestly, it is quite dry.  I was intrigued by the description, as I do not usually read fiction work involving mathematics or science.  To be honest, there were many times where I contemplated not finishing the book, but I wanted to give it a fair shot.

An Elegant Solution, by Paul Robertson, is just over 400 pages long.  I started to get intrigued around page 350.  There are a lot of seemingly unnecessary descriptions, and the dialogue is stilted.  Even so long ago, I find it hard to believe that people talked in such a manner.  It is almost as if they speak in riddles.

What I did love about the book was the way in which the author uses words.  It is hard to find good fiction these days…and by that I mean fiction works that use words well.  Paul Robertson is phenomenal with word play.  I appreciate that he played with rhymes, comparison, description, small themes woven throughout, and lots of Biblical references.  As a word lover, I got almost giddy sometimes with how clever the word play was.  Rarely is that seen in books today, as usually authors just state the facts or use a lot of dialogue to tell the story.

While often the word play is quite clever, it also often delves into the ridiculous however.  Too much of a good thing is still too much.  Sometimes the words were playing so much, I couldn’t figure out what was meant.

The overall plot was intriguing, as again, I do not usually read about that time period or about mathematics.  I enjoyed how mathematics was related to Christianity and how it shows us more of God.  The telling of the story however was quite slow and dry.  At the end, I also was left somewhat confused as to what happened.  The main character, who seemed so honorable throughout the story, suddenly trades his respect and honor to engage in theft and deceit.

Overall, I was unimpressed with the book.

Things To Do While Nursing

Any Mamas out there who nurse their littles?  I don’t know about you, but I have spent hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours sitting on the couch nursing.  While I love the time with my son, it can get a little boring sitting there with nothing to do.  So…..what are some of the things you can do while nursing?

  • Watch movies.  Some of the ones I’ve enjoyed on Hulu are The Biggest Loser, Once Upon a Time, White Collar, and MasterChef Junior.  And on Netflix…Say Yes to the Dress, My Fair Wedding, The Next Great Baker, and Merlin.  (Typically I watch more TV shows than movies while nursing…but there are movie options obviously on Netflix as well.)  But of course, there are only so many Hulu and Netflix shows you can watch before you go bonkers, so you could also….
  • Read.  Read a book you’ve been meaning to check off your list.  Read (or listen to) the Bible.
  • Listen to sermons online.
  • Memorize Scripture
  • Pray
  • Rest.  Or better yet, sleep, if you can.

What do you do while nursing?

Things People Google

I find it interesting to see the Google searches that bring people to our blog.  Sometimes they make sense and sometimes…..I’m left scratching my head.  Here are some of the things people have searched for.

  • “Pregnancy Update week 12.”  I’m not sure why week 12 gets the most searches, but….it does.  We also get lots of pregnancy search variations.
  • “Super Woman Versus Abiding Woman.”  Interestingly enough, this is one of the posts that gets the most traffic from Google.
  • “Long toenails.”  Yes, you read that right.  Long toenails.  When I first saw that one, I could NOT figure out how in the world someone came to our blog from that search!  (Do yourself a favor….do NOT Google it and definitely do NOT Google image it!!  I may or may not have made that mistake. 😉 )  Eventually I figured out it must have been from either this post or this one where I talk about the Wingman’s toenails developing in the womb.
  • “Looking down smiling and laughing.”  Not sure where this came from, either.
  • “Life with you blog Bonnie.”  Hmm….I’m guessing someone who knows us but couldn’t remember the link?
  • “We said i do, exchange vows…happy anniversary.”  Love the progression there.  🙂
  • Many variations of searches for posts on pilot training
  • “Discouraged on low carb.”  Aww, whoever you are, I’m sorry you were discouraged!  I really hope these posts (here, here, and here) helped encourage you!
  • “Praising the Lord with your thoughts and.”  Not sure what the end of that sentence was.  Hope they found what they were looking for!
  • “Ann Voskamp supports Romney Obama.”  It must have led them to this post.  Sorry I couldn’t help the searcher find an answer!
  • “My heart wants you.” And it led them here.  Aww, is our blog really that good?
  • “Christian response to false accusation.”  And many variations on that. Hopefully this post was helpful!
  • Various searches about waiting to get pregnant, PCOS, trusting God at the doctor’s office, etc. For all of you waiting to get pregnant, my heart aches with you, and you are in my prayers!!
  • “Amazing Race bridal shower.”  A while back I blogged about The Amazing Race.  Never thought about having it as a theme for my bridal shower, though!

Some of the searches made me laugh.  Some of them made me almost cry.  I hope that our blog can be an encouragement, whether you’re stopping by to find out about life at Laughlin, who Ann Voskamp supports for President, toe nail difficulties, bridal shower ideas, or encouragement for life’s difficulties!
